Willemite ps. Azurite with Mimetite, Dolomite
Pseudomorphs and related other 'morphs' are a never-ending source of intrigue, both mineralogically and visually. Found pre-1980 on Tsumeb's 29th Level, these fascinating and sought-after pseudos bring a lot to the table. With translucent, baby-blue Willemite replacing three crystals of Azurite, we have an attractive and interesting pseudomorph that is made even more dramatic when you factor in that you have a Zn-silicate replacing a Cu-carbonate. Not what you would have expected, but certainly curious. The cluster presents nicely, and there is a coating of white Dolomite over a majority of the pseudo, which adds an attractive contrast between the blue and white. Interestingly, the Willemite displays a yellow-orange fluorescence, which is a surprise. Likewise, the Dolomite has a brighter, orange fluorescence, also unexpected and makes me think that perhaps there is some Calcite mixed in with its cousin, Dolomite. The final touches are the scattered, GEMMY, and highly lustrous yellow Mimetite crystals. Worth a close look, these tapered and slender Mimetites range up to about 5 mm. This large thumbnail is a very fine, aesthetic, and uncommon specimen. Dr. Erika Pohl-Ströher - 31655. A very, very rare style, and a very aesthetic specimen!
