Roşia Montană in Alba County, Romania is arguably Europe's most famous gold producing region. Known since before Roman times it was during the late 1700s, when collectors began assembling systematic mineral collections, that this region really became famous, but for specimen gold, not gold metal. In those days specimens were usually labelled as from Hungary, but their characteristic sheet-like form of Native Gold is so distinct. This very large miniature to small cabinet specimen is a classic, but is unusual in having much of the Native Gold leaves upright, making for a really fine showpiece. This, combined with a good-sized matrix and an open veinlet lined with small Quartz crystals adds character. Ex Martin and Michael Günther (1951-2007 & 1956-2021) collection.
