Schneeberg, the famous silver mining area in Erzgebirge, Saxony, Germany, is the Type Locality for Native Bismuth. This area has produced some of the world's best crystals of Native Bismuth - a species which is so rarely well-crystallized - but also some very different crystal habits. One of the these, known as "Federwismut" (feather-bismuth), is represented in this miniature specimen as feather-like exsolution growths, possibly intergrown with greyish metallic Safflorite or Rammelsbergite. Specimens of Native Bismuth from the Type Locality are usually only seen in older historic collections and are very desirable, especially when they present this classic feather-bismuth habit. It is from the superb systematic collection assembled by the brothers Martin and Michael Günther (1951-2007 & 1956-2021).
