This super cabinet-sized display specimen from the famous Tsumeb mine in Namibia is a great demonstration of the juxtaposition of primary and secondary mineralization within the orebodies. The most prominent feature is a huge (3.7 cm on edge) tetrahedral Tennantite crystal with another smaller (1.1 cm) crystal in residence too. These primary crystals sit upon a concealed layer of small prismatic white Quartz crystals coating a grey host rock disseminated with mixed Sulphides. These primary minerals all remain relatively fresh and unoxidized internally, but the very outer surface of the Tennantite is altered to, and encrusted with, pale pink to colourless small rhombic crystals of secondary Smithsonite (zinc carbonate). The translucency of the Smithsonite allows the presence of primary residual Tennantite to be seen within the larger tetrahedral crystals. Another clue as to the remaining Tennantite is from several smaller broken crystals on the edges of the specimen which reveal the internal grey metallic primary sulphosalt. This is an extremely fine Tsumeb specimen with no damage to the main crystals and great geochemical story to go with it.
