BARYTE with Malachite
Shangulowé mine in the Katanga Copper Crescent has the reputation of having produced the finest Baryte specimens in the DRC, most of which were discovered several decades ago. This fine miniature specimen is ex Glyn Cunnick collection and ex Chris and Agatha Galas collection. It consists of the thicker style of bladed Baryte from there, which is less prone to damage than the more delicate paper-thin crystals. The Baryte crystals, which reach 1.5 cm in length, form a layer intergrown with orange-brown clay matrix and several small rounded botryoidal masses of green Malachite sit around the base of a few of the Baryte crystals. The Baryte crystals are faintly greyish-green, translucent to transparent and display a slightly resinous lustre. There is damage to some of the tips of the Baryte crystals around the periphery of the specimen but overall it presents very well.
