Descloizite epimorph after Vanadinite
This fascinating specimen from Berg Aukas in Namibia might not gain prizes for its general aesthetics, but look carefully and there is great beauty in its weird and wonderful structural form. Comprising almost totally of Descloizite as small sharp crystals, the overall form of this small cabinet specimen is of pencil-shaped crystals, ranging from 1.8 cm down to 0.4 cm, rising up like spines on a hedgehog. However, these rough textured pyramidally terminated prismatic crystals when seen from the side are hollow casts, formerly large Vanadinite crystals but now replaced by Descloizite. The Descloizite crystals are preferentially coloured dull brown on the outer surface of the casts and glossy back on the inner surfaces. A later generation of small white rhombs of Dolomite sit upon the glossy Descloizite within the epimorphs. An intriguing piece.
