Manganese oxides are often considered 'dull' species, but there are some rarities within that field and when combined with other, more colourful species these unusual minerals can spring to life. This small cabinet specimen is a rarity and classic from the famous MMM mine at Broken Hill, New South Wales, Australia. Its matrix is a characterful, somewhat bulbous botryoidal aggregate, of dark grey to black, matt, Coronadite. Each individual botryoid is composed of layers and this structure can be seen where some of the layers have flaked away to reveal different colours and textures. This in itself makes for a very interesting and unusual specimen of this rare manganese oxide species, but this is then liberally covered with bundles of yellow-green acicular Pyromorphite crystals. This association is so typically Broken Hill and yet so rare in this quality. It presents especially well.
