Hematite Var. SPECULARITE with Quartz
The combination of bipyramidal Smoky Quartz crystals on Hematite var. Specularite from the West Cumbrian iron mining district is unique to world mineralogy. An iconic combination, but one which now the mines have closed is very difficult to find in fine specimens. This one from Cleator Moor is great, having the combination of superb aesthetics as well as crucially being almost damage-free. The Smoky Quartz crystals on this piece are richly coloured and extremely glassy, reaching 2.1 cm tip to tip, and have the nice addition of a few small Calcite crystals scattered upon them. Many specimens like these were broken up by the minerals and assembled into "Spar Cases" or "Spar Boxes" - reassembled miniature grottos depicting what the crystal-lined cavities were like underground. There are one or two minor scuffs to the glossy black bladed Specularite Hematite crystals and very minor chipping to one or two of the Smoky Quartz crystals but overall it is in extremely good condition and has wonderful natural aesthetics. Minor Dolomite is also present at one end. An extremely fine west Cumbrian classic.
