Calcite
This is a very large, old-time classic Calcite from the West Cumbrian iron mining district, or more specifically from the Egremont area. Slightly domed in shape, an iron oxide rich core is coated by colourless Calcite crystals 1 to 3 cm in length. Many of these crystals are highly lustrous, gemmy and transparent but others are frosted upon their surface and translucent. Some of the crystals are cleaved or have slight bruising on the surface, but for its age it is in remarkable condition and looks very impressive. A crack runs through the specimen just off from halfway but appears to be stable. Ex Hans Englebrecht collection, no. 6401, with his label.
