Dioptase
Dioptase is well known from Africa, Russia, even Arizona and other places...but from Mexico?!?! First we have seen of it, was a small pocket in 2018 from Milpillas! This piece, said to be one of the best, was purchased from Marshall Sussman at the time he seemed to have the lot (perhaps all, perhaps most of it). It is a dazzling thumbnail specimen of elongated GEMMY Dioptase crystals forming several well defined radial sprays or fans. The individual crystals are just under 1 mm across but measure up to 1.4 cm long. The piece is highlighted by its sparkling glassy luster, transparent gem crystal quality and highly saturated intense emerald-green color. The color is electric! The majority of the Dioptase are well terminated with only a few incomplete edge crystals. The Dioptase is from a 2019 find on the 992 level of the Milpillas Mine, Sonora, Mexico. While the Dioptase crystal sizes from this limited find were small, the quality is superb. The mesmerizing emerald-green fire is hard to beat! It is a world class Dioptase thumbnail, from Mexico or anywhere, but also a highly unusual thumbnail for any species; and just plain beautiful. We have not seen others since.
