Cobaltoan Dolomite with Malachite
There are few places in the world where vivid pink Cobaltoan Dolomite is found and the Kakanda deposit in Kambove District, DR Congo is probably the best known. Often the Cobaltoan Dolomite occurs as brightly coloured but poorly crystallized coatings which might look attractive, but have no detail to them. This very large miniature specimen has great texture, featuring large rhombic crystals, reaching 2.3 cm on edge. These crystals have a colourless almost transparent core, but with an outer layer of vivid pink Cobaltoan Dolomite providing the colour. It is unclear if the colourless interior is Calcite, or pure Dolomite. Nevertheless, it gives the impression of shape and form to the Cobaltoan Dolomite, which combined with such a spectacular colour makes a great display. Lower down, where the large rhombic crystals attach to a fragment of matrix, the matrix is encrusted in glassy vivid pink Cobaltoan Dolomite microcrystals which under magnification look stunning. Minor green Malachite is also seen on the surface. The edge of one of the larger rhombic crystals has been chipped, with the outer pink layer having fallen off to expose the colourless interior. This is the only downside to this piece which, if mounted upright, looks extremely fine.
