This is a rare combination piece from Heißer Stein mine, but not only that it is large too. The Wölsendorf Fluorite Mining District in Bavaria, Germany has produced some magnificent crystallized Fluorite specimens and some fantastic Quartz specimens too - particularly the red, Hematite-rich variety, Eisenkiesel. This large cabinet specimen features both together. Large, golden-cream glassy Fluorite crystals, some reaching over 4 cm on edge, are aggregated together upon more massive Fluorite. Upon these Fluorite crystals a layer of 1 to 2 mm size, blood-red bipyramidal Quartz var. Eisenkiesel crystals have developed preferentially on certain directional faces. The large Fluorite cubes are intergrown, aligned with each other to create crystals spanning 4.5 cm. Rather than being completely smooth, their faces are made up of many small square sections, all slightly stepped, and providing unusual reflections of the light. This specimen is very well balanced, but to its detriment three or four of the large Fluorite cubes have been contacted, resulting in both cleavage breaks and one scuffed and fractured corner. Without these dings it would, without doubt be a top end German Fluorite. It is still an excellent specimen, and a rarity with its combination of Eisenkiesel on Fluorite.
