Fluorite
Corvara mine in Pénnes Valley, Trentino-Alto Adige , Italy was formerly a producer of optical grade Fluorite, but way before that it started as a silver mine in the 17th century. It was also, up until 1918, part of Austria, lying in the South Tyrol region. Much of the Fluorite from Corvara mine is crystal clear, which is unusual for Fluorite, but at this mine white Fluorite also occurs. Fine cubic crystals are seen in historic museum collections in central Europe, but the mine has long been closed and the dumps landscaped, so good specimens are rarely seen for sale. This small cabinet display specimen is extremely fine, almost damage free, and really well-balanced for display. The largest crystal is a 3.5 cm cube which is partially colourless and part milky white internally, but with a great glassy lustre. It really is rare to find classic Corvara mine specimens such as this available.
