This is a dramatic and classy Russian Beryl var. Aquamarine from the historically famous Nerchinsk area in Chitinskaya Oblast', Transbaikalia (Zabaykalye), Eastern Siberia, Russia. Gem mines started in Nerchinsk in the 1720s and shipped large quantities of Aquamarine to Saint Petersburg during that century. At that time it was the world's premier source of gem Beryl. At 17.5 cm tall this is a significant crystal from this region and probably heralds from a very old and grand European collection. In more recent times is was owned by Peter and Simone Huber. It is not only large, but presents the classic greenish-blue colour seen in many Nerchinsk Aquamarines with a flat pinacoid termination. Apart from the fractured surfaces around its base and one almost invisible reported repair it is in superb condition with just trivial chipping to been seen around its termination. There is virtually no damage to be seen along its prism length and internally it has a charming, wispy, inclusion-rich body. A really magnificent Russian Beryl var. Aquamarine.
