This lovely miniature Topaz-Smoky Quartz combination is from one of Russia's most famous pegmatite deposits - Murzinka mine (Mursinsk), which lies 70 miles north-northeast of Ekaterinburg in Sverdlovskaya Oblast', Middle Urals. It is an historically important granite pegmatite deposit within the Murzinka granite, known to produce gemstones since the 1720s, including Topaz, Beryl (Aquamarine and Heliodor) and Tourmaline. The Topaz crystal measures 2.5 x 1.8 cm and displays a perfect complex termination, reminiscent of a faceted gemstone, but in this case entirely natural. It is glassy and colourless, but with a hint of the faintest bluish colour and sits nicely on top of a cluster of two Smoky Quartz crystals. The only damage to the Topaz crystal is at its base where it joins the Smoky Quartz matrix. The Smoky Quartz forms two main crystals. Both are incomplete, but each display three sides of a hexagonal prism. Externally they are very dark brown, almost black, with a slightly matt lustre. On the back, internally the Smoky Quartz is much paler brown and fractured. This combination of a geometrically complex gemmy Topaz crystal on Smoky Quartz is classic for Murzinka mine, but finding fine matrix specimens is hard.
