Montroseite - a rare vanadium iron oxide hydroxide - is named after Montrose County in Colorado, USA and has been found at hundreds of sites through Colorado, Utah, Arizona and New Mexico. Elsewhere in the world it is much rarer, but remarkably a limestone quarry at Prachovice in the Czech Republic has produced the world's best specimens. That is where this very large miniature specimen is from. This discovery happened in about 2005 and this fine specimen was acquired by the brothers Martin and Michael Günther (1951-2007 & 1956-2021) for their remarkable systematic species collection. The Montroseite occurs as glossy black acicular to bladed microcrystals forming an open textured layer, or vein, 1.6 cm wide, within Calcite. The Montroseite crystals are well-formed and reach around 1.5 mm in length protruding into a cavity within the vein and forming compact acicular masses too. Coarse pale pink Calcite on one edge of the vein is delaminating from the rest of the specimen and looks like it might have been stabilized with glue at some point. The Calcite on the other side of the vein and the vein itself looks solid and presents a fine example of well-crystallized Montroseite from this unusual occurrence.
