Sometimes it is easy to forget the importance of localities, or regions, to an individual mineral species. This is certainly the case with Fluorapatite - the fluorine-bearing species of calcium phosphate. Its Type Locality is Sauberg mine at Ehrenfriedersdorf in Erzgebirge, Saxony, Germany, but most collectors would be unaware of that. This large miniature specimen is from Ehrenfriedersdorf and is an extremely fine example from this important area. It features a cluster of three short prismatic colour-zoned Fluorapatite crystals on crystallized Quartz matrix. The individual Fluorapatite crystals reach a significant 1 cm across by 5 mm long and present a pale burgundy inner layer surrounded, or sandwiched, at each end of the prism with pale grey. Despite being partially aggregated the crystal are in excellent condition and additionally show fine vertical growth lines. A classic Fluorapatite from the original source area.
