Getchellite with Realgar and Orpiment (Type Locality)
This is a rare, colorful miniature of a trio of arsenic-bearing sulfides form the Getchell Mine in Nevada. The orange Orpiment is obvious and the bright red Getchellite is also apparent along with a small amount of bright gray metallic Stibnite. The Orpiment forms almost asterism-like divergent, platy crystals 1 cm with a translucent, brilliant yellow-orange color. The crimson colored, translucent Getchellite forms euhedral to subhedral platy crystals and is intimately associated with Orpiment. Getchellite is a very rare arsenic-antimony sulfide for which this is the Type Locality. Older specimens lacked this richness and luster, and the best specimens came out in the 1960s-1980s in a few small pockets; although this particular find was brought out by Scott Kleine in the 1990s (after having been stashed from one of those older finds). A 1.8 cm crystal section of bright metallic Stibnite is also is in direct association. This is an outstanding miniature of this rare species with great crystals which are normally more embedded or broken. The sulfides are all hosted in a charcoal black, carbonaceous rock matrix for great contrast.
