Andradite on Hedenbergite
Andradite crystals from Serifos Island in the South Aegean Sea offshore from Greece are quite unlike any other garnet crystal I have encountered. They have an almost 'crystal model'-like appearance to them. I think it is the dark brown rims to the crystal edges that draws the eye the most, and at certain angles, in an optical illusion, these dodecahedral crystals look like cubes. The Andradite crystal edges are delineated by dark chocolate brown lines with the paler orange-brown centre's recessed slightly. This superb miniature specimen displays abundant intergrown orange-brown dodecahedral Andradite Garnet crystals measuring exceptionally to 1.5 cm across, but mostly in the 5 to 8 mm range, sat upon a thin bed of pale green to yellowish altered Hedenbergite. There is one minor area of the main display surface which has been contacted, but this is not instantly visible, it just has a rough surface. The main Andradite crystals are very nicely formed, with sharp edges. Classic Andradite from Serifos Island. This island is known for its skarn mineralization, with these Andradite Garnet groups probably being its most iconic species.
