Rutile var. Sagenite on Quartz
Sagenite is an unusual variety of Rutile (titanium dioxide) where the crystals are repeatedly twinned in a net-like pattern. It is most often encountered along joint surfaces or fractures in Quartz where the Rutile crystals are trapped in a 2-dimensional grid. This small cabinet specimen from Turbe Alp (Turben Alp) in the Binn Valley, Wallis (Valais), Switzerland presents the Sagenite variety of Rutile extremely well across a 5 x 3.5 cm surface area. The Rutile is a rich orange-brown with a fine silky lustre contrasting with the white to colourless Quartz matrix.
