The Broken Hill mines in New South Wales, Australia have produced some of the world's finest Spessartine garnet crystals as large deep burgundy-red crystals, usually embedded within or sat upon Galena and often associated with Rhodonite. This classic association appears to be unique to Broken Hill. This miniature specimen from North mine at Broken Hill comes from Milton Lavers' famous Broken Hill suite, assembled across many decades. It features a huge, 3.5 cm wide partial Spessartine crystal. Sadly, it is not complete, otherwise it would be worldclass, but the crystal faces which are present are sharp and richly coloured with a fine lustre. One face displays unusual surface pitting. The crystal protrudes from a piece of sulphide (Galena)-rich matrix.
