Olivenite
The copper mines surrounding the village of St. Day in Cornwall have produced some of the world's finest specimens of copper arsenates, including Olivenite. These minerals were discovered in the latest years of the 18th century and two main mines supplied the finest specimens - Wheal Gorland and Wheal Unity. Both mines worked the same mineralized veins, or lodes, with the richest copper arsenates being concentrated within what was known as the Great Gossan Lode. This fine small cabinet specimen of Olivenite from Wheal Unity shows the classic overgrowth of acicular olive green olivenite crystals upon large terminated Quartz crystals. The Olivenite crystals on this specimen are nicely coloured but are perhaps not as strikingly bright as on some specimens, but it is nevertheless extremely rich. Ex Malcolm Southwood collection.
