Malachite
The famous L'Etoile du Congo mine in the Katanga Copper Crescent, DR Congo started in 1907 (under a different name) and is still active today. Renowned for amazing Malachite specimens, this enormous natural sculptural masterpiece exemplifies everything that is great about this deposit. Standing tall at 39 cm in height and weighing 5.4 kg, the surface texture is, if not unique, quite remarkable. Rather than being a simple stalactite, this is a twisted, art-like form presenting many concentric colour-zoned sections through what appear to be stalactites, but how? Well, what makes this so unusual it as that it appears to have formed as underwater, or waterworn stalactites, or probably more likely stalagmites, the water preventing the formation of 3-dimensional stalactitic columns, instead resulting in a more 2D wavy structure, but not polished smooth, but with an undulated rough surface. This is an extremely fine, large, and dramatic Malachite specimen, unlike most others that you will ever see, and sure to be a talking point in the finest of collections.
