Description
These gorgeous pastel pink apophyllite crystals came out in 2003-2005 from the huge wollastonite mine that also produced purple calcites, red inesite, and these apophyllites in small pockets along the periphery of the huge solid wollastonite zones. I have actually been underground in the mine to see these pockets, and I (Rob) believe this piece came from the 180 meter level veins we saw, where the crystals form at the contact boundary of the host rock and the mineral being mined (wollastonite, for its silicon content). These are relatively small pockets in a huge mine! The best of these crystals came only once, those with the pink color, in 2003-2004. Other finds had less color, less robust crystals, etc. This apophyllite stands unusually for display, as a vertical specimen perched atop amethystine (pale purple) quartz. It was purchased at the time they came out, in China, and remained in my own personal collection of Chinese minerals until recently (only deaccessed because I obtained a larger specimen). For the size class, I always regarded this as one of the best and most elegant. It was exhibited in the China Crystalline treasures exhibition in Tucson's Museum at the University of Arizona, 2013. They remain among the most surprising of Chinese mineral finds.
Known provenanceKnowing where your specimen comes from and who owned it adds to its story and value. Good provenance helps prove it's authentic and preserves important details about its discovery.
