NATIVE Copper
A fine, somewhat sculptural hackly mass of Native Copper partially enclosing white rock with dispersed patches of pistachio green Epidote from No. 6 shaft, Centennial mine, Calumet Township, Houghton County, Michigan. The Centennial Mining Company was founded in 1876. In 1923 Calumet and Hecla took control of the mine with its eventual closure in 1966. Although not the sought after blocky, or dendritic Native Copper crystals known from some of the Michigan mines, this is nevertheless a very rich aggregate of the classic sharp, hackly, bladed form seen in natural copper. Ex David Hardman collection.
