NATIVE Copper
Globe mine at Painesdale, Adams Township, Houghton County, Michigan was one of the smaller mining operations, operating from a single shaft for most of its life. The Globe Mining Company was founded in 1864 and immediately discovered that despite covering just a few square miles of ground the southern extensions of four major lodes passed through its ground. Operations continued intermittently right up until the start of World War 2. This slightly different specimen is best described as a cut surface of Native Copper-bearing rock. The saw cut is not smooth, and has not been properly polished, but specimens from Globe mine are just never seen. The Native Copper is richly dispersed throughout the rock and with proper lapping and polishing this could be made into a lovely piece. The rear of the specimen is not cut parallel, but is rough and extends to 3.5 cm in thickness. Ex David Hardman collection, no. 1010.
