Crocoite
Crocoite from the classic old-time occurrence at Beresov near Ekaterinburg, Russia. Known since the mid-1700s, specimens found their way into all major collections worldwide, long before Crocoite was discovered in Tasmania. This miniature specimen shows the classic association of Crocoite on milky vein Quartz, something not seen in specimens from Tasmania. The Crocoite crystals are orange-red in colour and form short, wedge-shaped crystals, also very different to the antipodean material. The lovely old handwritten label accompanying this specimen uses the name Kalochrom, proposed in 1813 by Hausmann, but not widely adopted. The specimen is from the superb systematic collection assembled by brothers Martin and Michael Günther (1951-2007 & 1956-2021).
