Ernstite ps. Childrenite
This spearpoint trio of nearly parallel crystals exemplifies the classic ernstite after childrenite pseudomorph from the Linópolis district in Brazil. Eosphorite is a rare manganese-aluminum phosphate hydrate and ernstite is an equally rare manganese-iron-aluminum phosphate hydrate with hydroxyl and oxygen and is a product of oxidation of eosphorite. These pseudomorphs of ernstite after eosphorite result in this attractive burnt umber color. This artistic piece is two inches tall and nearly an inch and a half wide. Some of Brazil's pegmatites contain numerous primary and secondary phosphate species like these and the Linópolis district has produced the best pseudomorphs of this type! This robust trio of intergrown, slightly divergent crystals is quite dramatic and an absolutely excellent example of these eosphorite-ernstite pseudomorphs! Sharp and dramatic! Featured in the book Addicted to Beauty: The Legacy of Jack Halpern (Mineralogical Record, March 2025) on page 141, fig. 140.
