Cryolite with Weloganite
Francon quarry in the heart of Montréal is famous for its unusual suite of minerals, formed by the emplacement of the Mont Royal alkaline intrusion into the overlying limestone. The display surface of this small cabinet specimen is richly coated with glassy Cryolite crystals, a sodium hexafluoroaluminate and beneath these, about eight tiny, pale yellow Weloganite crystal are visible. Francon quarry is the type locality of Weloganite. It closed in 1981 as it is immediately surrounded by a residential area in central Montréal , with even the grid pattern of the roads of the entire district aligned to the perimeter of the quarry, which, of course, was there prior to the roads and buildings!
