Zircon
Seiland Island is almost at the very northern extremity of Norway and is host to over twenty mineral species. The island is most famous for its Zircon which forms excellent crystals. This small cabinet specimen displays a splendid 1.6 x 1.0 x 1.2 cm well developed, sharp Zircon crystal set in a matrix of black Biotite mica. A white band of finely crystallised Albite Feldspar crosses the bottom section of the mica. The Zircon crystal ranges from a thin transparent outer shell to a translucent burnt clove brown inner core. When examined closely, the Zircon emits flashes of bright orange. A terrific example of Zircon from Storjordtind on Seiland Island, Troms og Finnmark, Norway. The accompanying video shows this specimen in white LED light and ultraviolet light, under which is fluoresces an unusual and distinctive mustard yellow orange!
