Calcite
The huge complex of open pits at Rudny exploit an iron ore deposit, the operation having begun in 1957. Rudny is in Kostanay Province in Kazakhstan and has recorded 70 mineral species to date. This excellent cabinet specimen is a fine example of Calcite, forming large complex twinned crystals of gemmy to translucent pale honey yellow. The larger of the two dominant crystals measures approximately 5 x 4 x 3.5 cm and all crystals display slightly curved faces and edges. The Calcite appears to be internally gemmy but because all the faces have a frosted texture the resulting effect is that of translucent crystals. These large Calcites sit on a bed of 2 to 4 mm tiny Calcite crystals covering a fine textured greenish-grey matrix.\n
