Dyscrasite
The silver antimonide Dyscrasite is one of those species you either love or are indifferent to; one of those minerals frequently referred to as a “grey ugly”. But as we all know, beauty is in the eye of the beholder, so for the many collectors who passionately love such natural alloys and sulphosalts, this is one fabulous example of a quite rare species. From the St. Andreasberg mining district in Harz, Lower Saxony, Germany, this good-size miniature has a milky white Calcite matrix with most surfaces covered with well formed Dyscrasite crystals of a sooty, mid to dark greyish silver with a matt metallic lustre. All the prisms have vertically striated faces and are mostly terminated, although in a variety of habits; some terminations are micro-crystallised, some are concave while others are pitted with a hackly texture. I estimate the average crystal length is 1 cm while some attain up to 1.5 cm, with several ‘V’ twins present. There is no doubting this is a magnificent example of Dyscrasite, one which will make an excellent addition to many an advanced collection.\n
