Cuprite
This rich, dense, large miniature specimen of Cuprite is from one of the all-time Cornish classic occurrences - Wheal Gorland. It is richly crystallized with large (up to 4.5 mm across) blood-red octahedral Cuprite crystals lining a profusion of cavities within Cuprite-Quartz veinstone. Small patches of metallic Native Copper are also present within the Cuprite. The Cuprite crystals are generally not gemmy, but more translucent or opaque, which is a probably a reflection of its undoubted age - much of this material from Wheal Gorland was discovered and collected in the earliest years of the 19th century. There is also some damage to exposed crystals, but those within cavities are in good condition and show great growth features related to their octahedral form. Classic, old-time material from the famous copper enrichment zone beneath the gossan in this most famous of Cornish mines. Ex Martin and Michael Günther (1951-2007 & 1956-2021) collection.
