MENDIPITE
Mendipite is a rare lead oxychloride whose type locality is given as the Mendip Hills. Torr Works quarry is within this region and produced numerous fine specimens, throughout the years the mineralised sections of the quarry were worked. This excellent small cabinet specimen is ex. the Jim Knight Collection and is accompanied by one of his labels; perfectly legible, but severely water damaged. Jim was a highly respected mineral collector living in south Manchester and a close collecting friend of Richard Barstow. An excellent account of Jim’s life and collection can be found in Volume 20 (2017) of the Journal of The Russell Society, a downloadable PDF can be found on their website. Pale pink to creamy white crystallised Mendipite forms an approximately 7 x 2.5 cm core surrounded by a Calcite-rich, sooty black manganese matrix. Also, ex. the Mike Brooke Collection.
