Fluorite

Fluorite from the La Barre mine, Saint-Jacques-d'Ambur, Puy-de-Dôme, Auvergne-Rhône-Alpes, France is known the world over for its amazing colour zoning. This miniature specimen features an aggregate of zoned cubic Fluorite crystals on a thin matrix of massive Fluorite. The crystals are dominated by a 2.2 cm crystal, displaying excellent zonation from dominant amber yellow in the core to colourless and blue in the outer few millimetres. One rear corner of this main crystal is cleaved away, but the side and rear faces of the crystal display the most prominent zonation with much richer bluish shades in the outer edge.

Editor's note
French fluorite is valued for it's amazing color zoning - look at the corner of the cube in the image, it is yellow at the centre and blue on the outside. This happened because natural conditions changed dramatically while the fluorite crystal was forming and the outer layers formed different color from the inner ones. This specimen is an affordable example of French color zoning and a great fit for a European or worldwide fluorite collection.
