This exceptional small cabinet specimen (or large miniature) of Epidote surrounding a terminated Quartz crystal is from a locality given as Hongxizhen quarry in Meigu County, Sichuan, China, but this is deceptive and requires further explanation. This quarry was formerly known in the west as ‘Hongquizhen quarry’ because of the mistranslation of a Chinese character to ‘qu’ rather than ‘x’. To complicate matters further, these fine specimens come from a forest reserve between Hongxi Town and Mabian County, where mining and specimen removal is now banned. It would seem the Hongxizhen Quarry is fictitious, to deflect form the actual locality. All this aside, the superbly crystallised, intensely dark green Epidote forms flattened, fan-like sprays to 1.5 cm across at the broadest crest and single crystals up to 3 cm tall. These nucleate around a mainly transparent, colourless, double terminated Quartz crystal measuring approximately 5.2 x 2.5 x 2.3 cm. It’s a beautiful specimen.\n
