Calcite with Fluorite
A superb display specimen of Calcite with Fluorite from the Collada mine in the Asturias Region of northern Spain. The Fluorite crystals from the La Collada mining district are instantly recognizable and attractive. Sometimes they occur on a bed of white Calcite which contrasts extremely well with the deep purple colour of the Fluorite, but it is rare to get well-crystallized Calcite too. This specimen is remarkable in displaying large scalenohedral Calcite crystals to over 6 cm in length. The Calcite crystals, of which there are many, contain inclusions of sulphides. The Fluorite crystals reach approximately 1.5 cm across and display smooth major cubic faces modified by a strong development of the dodecahedron, manifested in broad bevelled, or chamfered edges, with distinctive surface crazing. The Fluorite crystals have the appearance of being quite dark purple in colour, but when backlit, or illuminated with strong directional light, the vibrant internal purple colour really shows through, contrasting with the darker purple chamfered edges. This specimen specifically comes from the 75 Level on Josefa-Veneros vein and dates back to an early find. A superb Spanish Calcite-Fluorite combination from the most desirable of occurrences.
