Herodsfoot mine Bournonite is one of the most sought after of all Cornish mineral species and although other countries have produced similar 'cogwheel' crystals, the Cornish ones remain the most desirable. These were of course not from the original, late 18th century discovery, at Wheal Boys, but from the species-defining finds at Herodsfoot mine between 1850 and 1875, most of which passed through the hands of Richard Talling. This small cabinet specimen features three main clusters of dark grey, metallic, bladed Bournonite crystals, the largest crystal reaching 22 mm across. These crystals sit upon, and within, an attractive bed of pyramidal Quartz crystals which themselves overgrow massive Quartz with linear patches of Galena typical of material from Herodsfoot mine. None of the Bournonite crystals are a perfect 'cogwheel', but they do show the stepped, and knotched, edges to the crystals. The specimen comes with a custom-made acrylic display stand and is accompanied by a fragile, old, late 19th century N. Boubée label from Paris. The age of this label suggests that this specimen was part of the famous discoveries at Herodsfoot mine.
