This miniature specimen from the exceptional collection of brothers Martin and Michael Günther (1951-2007 & 1956-2021) has class written all over it. It is an Acanthite from one of the most important historical localities for this species - Freiberg, Erzgebirge, Saxony, Germany. The specimen consists of an elongated piece of matrix and sulphide (possibly also Acanthite) on top of which (at one end) are perched several well-formed cubic and cubo-octahedral dark grey metallic Acanthite crystals. One crystal is an individual, about 7 mm across, whilst two or three others of a similar size, are aggregated as a cluster. It has been debated whether or not these cubic Acanthite crystals are, infact, pseudomorphs after Argentite but opinion is divided. Either way, they are world class. The town of Freiberg was built around silver mining for over 800 years until the last of the industry closed in 1969. However, because of its heritage the town is part of a UNESCO World Heritage Site known as the Ore Mountain Mining Region.
