Calcite is one of the commonest minerals on Earth and yet some Calcite crystal forms are just so distinctive that collectors instinctively know where they are from and are taken in their mind to that place. The West Cumbrian iron mining district in northwest England has produced several distinct forms of Calcite all of which are now regarded as classics. One of these forms is 'pencil-shaped' water-clear prismatic crystals often aggregated in divergent sprays, producing a spectacular array. Many of these specimens were found during the 1890s and distributed by a small number of local mineral dealers into the world market. This cabinet specimen from Egremont is a particularly fine example and remarkably intact given its undoubted age. Multiple pristine, crystallographically marvellous, crystal-clear, terminated prismatic crystals to over 2 cm in length adorn the specimen. An absolute wonder from Cumbria from the Martin and Michael Günther collection. The specimen comes with custom acrylic stand for display.
