Fluorite
Llamas Quarry, Asturias in northern Spain is one of the best known Fluorite producers in Spain. This Fluorite-producing quarry was active during the 1970s when it produced some of the finest specimens in the Caravia mining area. A second discovery nearby, in about 2010, produced some exceptionally fine crystals. We don't have a record of when this specimen was collected, but the Obdulia vein from where it came, was still producing great specimens in 2017. This cabinet-size display specimen features a cluster of intense purple cubic Fluorite crystals, much darker in colour than many specimens from here. The crystals sit nicely within a rounded pocket in white to very pale cream coloured Quartz that provides a lovely contrast. The Fluorite crystals reach 2 cm on edge and show a range of crystal forms, from the straightforward cube to one with pronounced bevelled edges. A very attractive specimen from Llamas Quarry.
