SCHEELITE on QUARTZ

The Tae Hwa mine (aka Taehwa mine) at Neungam-ri in South Korea is now relegated to the history books because following the mine’s closure in 1973 the dumps were completely removed and the whole area is now revegetated. Tae Hwa mine worked Quartz veins rich in tungsten mineralisation, along with more minor metals such as copper and tin. This fine representative miniature comprises of a part Scheelite crystal attached to part of a milky Quartz crystal. Although one side of the octahedral Scheelite is missing, that which remains is nonetheless a splendid Scheelite. The missing part probably never existed as the face is coated with Muscovite mica and likely represents a contact surface against the adjacent matrix. The Scheelite crystal is translucent sherry to clove brown with octahedral edges to 2.3 cm and a fine glassy lustre. The Scheelite does not fluoresce in LWUV but under short wave ultra violet is a patchy light blue.\n
