Weloganite
Weloganite is one of those rare, instantly recognisable species, where good crystals are only associated with one locality - that being Francon quarry, Montréal, Québec, Canada. The quarry, which has long since ceased extraction, is now completely surrounded by urban sprawl. This miniature specimen has a cavity containing at least 4 prismatic Weloganite crystals. The largest reaches a very respectable 1 cm in length and is a typical pale lemon-yellow colour. Weloganite is a geochemical curiosity - a hydrated sodium strontium zirconium carbonate - and is named in honour of a Welsh geologist who emigrated to Canada for work: William Edmond Logan (1798-1875).
