The Andr'ssy II mine in north eastern Hungary has produced a rich suite of over sixty mineral species, Cuprite being one if its more well known. In comparison to the ten specimens currently shown on mindat, this is by far the largest, composed of at least six connected Cuprite crystals to form an elongated small cabinet specimen. The dodecahedral Cuprite crystals are between 2 and 2.5 cm wide, all coated and masked by an overgrowth of dark bottle green to light leaf green Malachite. A thin crust of rusty orange-brown limonite adheres to the base with a few clusters attached to the specimen's sides. The Andr'ssy II mine lies in the Rudab'nyai Mountains in Borsod-Aba'j-Zempl'n County, Hungary. In a few places the underlying Cuprite shows through the Malachite and is seen to be its characteristic glassy, translucent mahogany red. An excellent Cuprite from this famous mine.
