Calcite is one of the world's commonest mineral species and yet it is remarkable that specimens from one mine can be so instantly recognizable - that being Elmwood mine, Carthage, Smith County, Tennessee, USA. This cabinet specimen displays a characteristic gemmy, orange tipped, glassy, doubly-terminated scalenohedral Calcite crystal or, more correctly, a 'macle twin' sat upon large, glossy black Sphalerite crystals. The Calcite crystal looks stunning, with sharp, well-defined faces, excellent colour and brightness, and in such a perfect, prominent position for display. It is at least 6 cm in length and is in great condition: there appears to be a small cleaved section on the back of the upper crystal tip, but this is not seen from the display angle. Otherwise, it is absolute perfection and simply glows.
