Chalcocite
The copper sulphide Chalcocite forms world-class crystals at Geevor mine, famously situated at Pendeen, north of St. Just and close to the Land’s End coastline. This iconic mine has workings which extend out under the Atlantic Ocean and in the shallower levels during stormy weather, miners could hear boulders rolling about on the sea floor above them! Rather disconcerting to say the least. This thumbnail specimen is a single Chalcocite crystal, 2.3 cm in length and ‘T’ shape in cross section. Viewed from the terminated end with the T section inverted, it is reminiscent of the Concord supersonic jet airliner or space shuttle in profile, but without the swept delta-wings! All crystal faces are steel blue grey with a supressed satin-metallic lustre and display hints of peacock blue iridescence. Similar Chalcocite crystals, but with the addition of a flat head, were termed ‘nail head’ Chalcocite, so this specimen is more like the business end of the nail without the head, more a ‘panel pin’ Chalcocite! It is a superb thumbnail size Chalcocite crystal from Simms Lode, Geevor mine, Pendeen.\n
