Specimens of Hemimorphite from Elkhorn mine, Elkhorn Mining District, Jefferson Co., Montana, USA are rarely ever seen available and this is a beauty. Not only is it richly covered in sparkling, well-formed, bladed Hemimorphite crystals, but it is large too - at a quite large cabinet size. The matrix is a gossan, and the larger Hemimorphite crystals have a pleasant pale blue tinge to them, adding character. To add to the interest, the specimen is accompanied by an old handwritten label from the Swedish collector Dr Harry von Eckermann (1886-1969) which appears to suggest that he obtained it from the U.S. National Museum, rather than the other way around. Eckermann is known to have worked for U.S. Steel between 1909 and 1912 and the Elkhorn mine closed in 1912, so perhaps that was when he obtained it. Either way, this is a significant American Hemimorphite specimen, from an important early locality.
