Hedenbergite
The Nordmark Odal Field in Filipstad, Värmland, Sweden, is one of those remarkable, relatively small localities which has more than its fare share of minerals! This ore field extends in a NE-SW strike just south of the small village of Nordmark and is host to almost 120 species and type locality to fourteen. Although Hedenbergite is not amongst its type locality list, it does get a gold star rating as the best species from this locality in the mindat ratings. A large prismatic Hedenbergite crystal measuring 3.5 x 3.5 x 1.4 cm yet extending back at one point from 1.4 to 2.4 cm, rests at 45 degrees to a matrix of massive Hedenbergite. The crystal is most probably intensely dark green, but even under the strongest light source, I can only see it as black. Although incomplete, the crystal nicely displays many good faces and a fine, half complete termination. Down towards the left of the crystal a continuous crack is present, but this has been fully stabilised in our lab with no indication of an internal repair. This lovey miniature Hedenbergite from Sweden comes with an old printed label marked 'Pyroxen: Augit'.
