Calcite
For a mineral as common as Calcite it is rare to find a locality that produces such an iconic, distinctive form but that is exactly what St. Andreasberg in Harz, Lower Saxony, Germany is known for. Specimens from there, with their distinctive hexagonal prismatic outline and white caps, are so desirable and not readily available due to their age - most were collected centuries ago. This particular specimen is a cracker. Not only does it display the textbook crystal form, but it is large, at 13.7 cm in length! Individually the prismatic Calcite crystals reach over 2 cm tall and form an aesthetic arrangement like stepping stones, or even a miniature Giant's Causeway but with white hexagonal columns of Calcite rather than black Basalt columns. There is some minor wear around the top edges of the Calcite crystals but this is to be expected with its age and is not immediately apparent. This is an extremely high end specimen from the wonderful collection assembled by brothers Martin and Michael Günther (1951-2007 & 1956-2021). A true old European classic.
