Bornite ps. after Chalcocite
This excellent thumbnail pseudomorph of Bornite after Chalcocite is from Levant mine at Trewellard near to St Just in Cornwall, England. The engine houses of this famous mine sit on the cliff tops overlooking the Atlantic Ocean, under which the mine workings extend. The Bornite is very dark grey to black with a matt lustre and has replaced the elongated former Chalcocite crystals with sharp, crisp pseudomorphs of up to 1.5 cm long. Some of these are capped with flattened nail-head terminations, a classic feature of Chalcocite from this area of southern Cornwall. This lovely thumbnail is accompanied with a small, unprovenanced German label.
